Union County has a population of 4,174 and a median income of $26,320. The county contains approximately 3 million acres of High Plains short grass prairie,

Mountain terrain and 3 major riparian areas. There are approximately 40,000 acres of federal land in the Kiowa National Grasslands and Capulin National Monument.

Agriculture is the major economy of the county with 97% of the land in production, and is responsible for over $275 million in cash receipts annually.

Attractions include the Capulin National Monument, Clayton Lake State Park, and Dinosaur Tracks.
